Man runs car over father-in-law after dispute over custody of children in Rajkot

A marital discord took an ugly turn as a man from Jamnagar allegedly ran his car over his father-in-law in Rajkot late Thursday after his estranged wife attempted to take custody of their children and brought them to her parent’s home.

The incident took place outside the residence of the victim, Malde Pandavadra, at Mafatiyapara on Kankot Road, located on the outskirts of Rajkot city.

The police said that Hitesh Chavda ran his car over his 55-year-old father-in-law around 7.30 pm after a dispute over the custody of children.

The FIR lodged was against Chavda on the basis of Pandavadara’s complaint. According to the complaint, Sandhya, Pandavadra’s eldest daughter, had married Chavda around 10 years ago.
The couple have a nine-year-old daughter and a six-year-old son. However, due to marital discord, Sandhay had returned to her father’s home around five months ago, leaving behind her children in Jamnagar.

The FIR, registered at Rajkot Taluka police station early Friday, said that Sandhya went to her in-laws’ home in Jamnagar on Thursday morning, as it was her daughter’s birthday. It said that without informing Chavda, Sandhya brought her daughter and son with her in Rajkot around 6.30 pm.

Around an hour later, the FIR added, Chavda came in his car with his friend Vikki alias Khado and two unidentified men. “They pulled their car outside my home and started hurling abuses. He grabbed my daughter Sandhya with her hair and started beating her, telling her to return him his children,” the FIR quoted Pandavadara.

He claimed that the assailants pushed the two minor children in the car and tried to speed away.
“In an attempt to stop them, I ran towards the road. However, Hitesh increased the speed of his car and with an intent to kill me, kept speeding towards me. The car knocked me down and ran over my waist and legs,” Pandavadara, a construction labourer, said in his complaint.

The police said the assailants also beat Sandhya with sticks. Further, they assaulted Sandhya’s younger sisters Asha and Preeti before speeding away with the children.

An injured Pandavadara was rushed to the Rajkot civil hospital. “His injuries are not very serious and he is out of danger,” Inspector V R Patel, in charge of Rajkot Taluka police station, said.

“As Chavda speed his car in the direction of the victim with an intent to kill the latter, we have booked the accused under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC),” Patel added.

The accused have also been booked under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 114 (abettor present when crime is committed) of the IPC.

“The accused are at large but we have formed various teams to arrest them,” Patel said.
