BMC to fell 3 trees, transplant 2 for upcoming Gokhale bridge

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in a notification have informed that five trees will be affected for constructing the new Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge in Andheri that was pulled down earlier in March this year.

According to the civic body’s May 29 public notice, of the five trees, three will be pulled down entirely while two will be transplanted. Civic officials said the affected trees will hinder the path of cranes that will be used for staging work and launch of girders.

“In the next phase, the assembling and staging work for this bridge will be taken up. The staging site that we have selected will be used for operating cranes and the trees are coming in the way as obstructions. Therefore, these trees will be removed from the site so that the cranes can operate smoothly,” said an official.

The trees will be removed from the eastern side of the railway track, said civic officials, and four of the five trees are small in size. “The alignment of the bridge is fine but we need to create platforms from where girders will be launched. This will be in the final stage of work,” the official said.

Local residents and activists have questioned BMC’s timing of floating a proposal for bringing down trees six months after issuing a work order to build the new bridge. “BMC was to complete the bridge by end of May 2023, and this latest development shows they have not been able to do anything significant so far. This clearly makes us question BMC’s execution of the work. How come they realised midway through the project that trees are a hurdle to construction?” said Zoru Bhathena, city based activist.

Dhaval Shah, local resident and member of Lokhandwala Oshiwara Citizen’s Association (LOCA) said BMC should expedite construction. “Citizens are unlikely to object to cutting of trees, because in the absence of this bridge, traffic is a chaotic affair in Andheri, which is creating carbon emissions that are more than the five trees could counter. So, the only way to prevent emission is to build the bridge quickly. Authorities should understand the inconvenience we are facing and expedite the work,” he said.

A primary east-west connector in western suburbs—the Gokhale Bridge— was shut down for vehicular and pedestrian movement in November 2022. Thereafter the railways dismantled it as the bridge passed above the railway tracks. The BMC, last January, had floated tenders for the construction of a bridge, and it says that one arm of the bridge will be opened by November end this year, and the entire bridge will be operational by May 2024.
